When I was in Karachi doing some work with Afghan refugees, we worked with local volunteers who were so poor that they had no bus fares to get home after they had spent many hours working diligently with us. They took so much pride and pleasure in volunteering. It struck me vividly how people who had nothing wanted to give so much! Amazing!
The Afghan families I met had very little material wealth, yet they would offer dry fruits to a guest – a mehman as they called them. In this act of kindness they felt like a maharaja – a king.
In Christian history, the same philosophy underlies the story of the poor widow who gave a few pennies at the temple but was recognized by Jesus over those who gave large gifts because he knew that she was giving everything she could.
How about you? How rich are you? And I don't mean net worth.
